freizo is a repository network infrastructure, originally developed in 2006 by Data Futures LBG a U.K. charity based at the University of Westminster.
freizo repositories provided resilient data resources for individual research activities of institutional partners, including Basel, Cornell, Heidelberg, Princeton and Westminster universities.
More than 30 freizo repositories were implemented—many of which are still in service—using MongoDB to replicate metadata across geographically-distributed Linux servers and AWS for asset storage. Partner institutions’ projects are migrating research data resources developed using freizo to hasdai—an InvenioRDM-based repository network infrastructure based on distributed Linux-based servers and robotic LTO tape libraries that are colocated with French and Swiss national research data facilities.

Data Futures LBG was dissolved in 2016 following the BREXIT referendum and re-established in Leipzig in Germany. The hasdai Memorandum of Understanding between Data Futures GmbH and CERN was signed in 2017. Data Futures is a contributor of WADM annotation technology to the InvenioRDM Open Repository software platform, which is managed by CERN on behalf of the international InvenioRDM Consortium. The Zenodo research data repository, which is operated on behalf of the European Commission by CERN via OpenAIRE, is based on InvenioRDM. Data Futures GmbH manages the operation of the hasdai network of repositories.
